This Month in Sanctum: August 2024

Roadmap Update August 2024

See Roadmap Update July 2024 for last month’s update.

What’s new this month?

CEX LSTs

As I’m sure you have heard, a few CEXes have started announcing that they are launching their LSTs on Solana!

This is a super big deal as millions of new users will be able to easily own a piece of – and play their part in securing – one of the greatest and most performant decentralised networks. This is a big win for all of us. Additionally, CEXes are adopting open-source, decentralised, community-owned SPL stake pool programs instead of building their own gated solutions. This means that they will be able to leverage all of Sanctum and all of DeFi from day 1. Again, a massive win.

This was many months of work behind the scenes that we couldn’t really talk about (still) since we are under NDAs.

While we have spoken with all the CEXes, we worked very closely with Bybit in particular to build some bespoke infrastructure for them. It wasn’t all smooth-sailing: working with the CEXes requires a new level of professionalism and has taught us to improve our documentation and processes. We’re experimenting with certain things to make new LST launches better and more seamless, which you should hopefully observe soon.

Sanctum 2.0

In last month’s report I mentioned that we were working on certain “zero to one” concepts: “radically reimagining the scope of what liquid staking can be, and radically transforming what crypto will look like in the process.”

The overarching vision for Sanctum is to make people wealthier, happier, and more fulfilled. A big part of this is to give people compelling reasons to hold, grow, and spend their wealth. Crypto is pretty good at the “growing wealth” part, but not so good at the holding or the spending: the moment you actually want to spend your money you offramp it.

Sanctum 2.0 is our experiment to solve this. These are just renders for now, very early-stage, but hopefully this gives some idea of what we’re thinking:

Sanctum Research

Our goal for Sanctum Research is to make it the knowledge base for anything LST- or Sanctum- related. If Discord is the water cooler, Sanctum Research is the town bulletin.

Over the past months, Sanctum Research has really exploded! You guys have really made it incredible. I want to thank @Halfa for kicking off the Sanctum Research “gentleman’s pot” and everyone for contributing to it. And we have had so many awesome proposals, comments and activity. @Bengshark, @GreythornAM, @Begrime800, @JohnnyTheClown, @MikeAF, @DanikaHollandaise, @Asimsy, @fairysquid, @luciotamino are all super active and beloved members who have been making this place awesome. I would love to integrate $CLOUD into this place somehow.

We’ve started to ask new and existing projects to create posts for their LSTs, and that’s been awesome as well. Sanctum Research should eventually be the canonical “encyclopedia” for each LST entry, for people to learn more about it.

What would you guys like to see more of in Sanctum Research? What would take it to the next level? Let me know!

Other smaller changes

  • Dark mode was supposed to take one week, but we took the opportunity to completely overhaul our design system. This took a lot of work, but means that new Sanctum components will be a lot quicker and easier to build, improving our ship speed :rocket: :rocket:
  • We started working with DRiP creators to start thinking about what we could build to make personal LSTs as useful to them as possible.
  • We are talking to a few community members to set up some sort of microgrants program. We are looking to bring a community member on with one and only one mandate: figure out how to get community right.

Sanctum Community Wins

I want to take some time to spotlight wins in the Sanctum community, or stuff that I personally find cool! Note that nothing here should be thought of as official endorsements or financial advice of any sort. If there’s anything you’d like to share with me, please reach out to me any time

Pathfinders

One of our partner projects, Pathfinders, recently wrapped up their NFT mint! It was a big success. Congratulations to them.

These mints are powered by Sanctum’s LSTs underneath the hood: they’re the world’s first LST-NFTs. They let users mint an NFT by locking 2 pathSOL up front, and they can unlock it any time to get their 2 pathSOL back. This is a much less exploitative model than the traditional NFT model.

I wrote a post about why I think Pathfinders are cool, and why they could potentially completely change the NFT meta here. 7,000+ LST-NFTs now exist in the Solana ecosystem: that’s over 14,000 SOL locked in this new meta. I hope they continue to ship a product we can all be proud of.

Windfall

This is a very early stage project, but I thought this proposal by the Windfall team was very cute! I love the graphics! Bonksie is looking extra cute here:

What’s next?

We have a VERY long engineering backlog. We’re working on SDKs, user dashboards, improved site UX, landing page, API improvements, Sanctum 2.0, bbSOL, wifSOL and flojoSOL bespoke support, INF improvements and program upgrades, etc…

Also, we are hiring! Public post here.

The immediate next step is to prepare for Breakpoint where we can’t wait to meet all of you. Sanctum is hosting the Breakpoint closing party BTW. The entire team will be there and there is one announcement we can’t wait to share with you

And one last thing…

This is why we do what we do.

The main question…

THE BURNING QUESTION…

Will there be merch @ Breakpoint

(pls say yes)

In all seriousness, thank you for the mention and all the work you’ve done post-TGE @fplee.

I agree, this forum should be a place for the canonical “Cloudopedia” for everything Sanctum.

I’d like to see for us to be able to vote onchain and direct grants/microgrants and ideas forward with the power of our CLOUD. I think a few community members have expressed the same in one way or form.

  1. @Aro
Proposal for staking of CLOUD Earnestness allocation - #7 by Aro
    &
Delegation of CLOUD voting power, possible mechanism - #4 by Jdd0810

  2. @cee_808
Proposal for Profile-Based Governance Voting - #8 by fairysquid

  3. @wtp123
Proposal: Creation of Liquid Voting Tokens (LVTs)

Would also love to see an ASR style mechanism towards incentivising activity or rewarding such activity as outlined here:

@Asimsy

Seeing the community grow in real time…

The 2 big win with CEX LSTs are awesome - open-source, decentralised networks, community-owned SPL stake pool :cloud:

For me, the building of this fulfillment is already visible, the super-active community really speaks out and supports each other as a whole. This is quite unusual in this space in a safety way.
I think the protocol protects users in the Solana ecosystem - which could onboards many new explorers in the future with far more good results than usual if Solana grow up too, leading to more good feedback especially with the core support.

@fplee I just want to say the things the Sanctum team mange to pull through, never ceased to amaze me. It is amazing how your conviction and perseverance towards your goal has started to materialize and accelerating. I know working with those CEXs was challenging, but if we have learned something from Sanctum, where there is a will there is a way. I am not only grateful but extrmely honored to be part of such an amazing community and i try my best to be as helpful as possible.

I also reqlly enjoy the Sanctum research site and find inmese value here. I had started to advices some of the LSTs operators as well to share their product and platform on this forum page (xSOL, StrongSOL, and eonSOL). I am looking forward for the future and continue to grow with Sanctum and this awesome community that you and the team had influenced since day 1.

Great post and excited to know that announcement you all can’t wait to share :grinning:

Well written, and all encompassing update. Thank you @fplee & team for continually placing your confidence in the community. This steadfast trust keeps us all on our toes, and also employs us to give our best efforts.

Glad to hear that your recent CEX experience was rewarding. Can’t understate the importance of crossing your T’s and dotting your I’s lol.

Your experience will only anchor Sanctum’s strength and credibility!

On the merch topic…I think some cloud pins or patches would be excellent. Nice and small, can be handed out easily.

Won’t be able to make BP, but at some point I hope the team walks out to the Wonderland Season 1 theme song like they are the starting line up for the DeFi world championship games🤩 That track gets me HYPED.

So many updates and exciting news! A fresh design, dark mode, user dashboards, CEX LSTs, and more!

The microgrants idea sounds amazing—kind of like Pathfinders’ Mochis, right? I’m actually getting a real-life Gundam box set through them! For me, that’s a milestone—receiving a tangible item from this universe we’re building together. When I think of other networks’ tokens, they often feel cold and distant. But just by looking at the Sanctum LSTs list, you can feel the life behind them. You know real people like you are improving their lives through this confluence of cooperation, which is far better than competition, as it fosters prosperity and growth for everyone rather than inequality.

With that in mind, I believe we should always focus our efforts on minimizing competition. Some forms, like our grant pool prize, aren’t necessarily bad, and I see many great ideas that use light competition to boost participation. Shifting toward a truly non-competitive model is a gradual process, requiring a major shift in our mindset. Yet, I already see the seed of this idea in Earnestness. The traditional model we were raised with is outdated, while the new world we’re building embraces values and ideals that weren’t shared by previous generations. There’s no roadmap—we’re creating it as we go, with web3 providing the space for it to grow, and we must nurture and water it with Drops from our CLOUD :cloud_with_rain:

Cheers to all of you, fellow Wonderlanders! I can’t wait for the quests we’ll undertake alongside one another!

edit: Just found out I only got a raffle ticket for the Gundam box draw, for the mochis, haha! Still fun, either way

This is one major reason why I am the most dedicated to this project over any other. You and your team really seem to believe in this and put it in front of everything you do. We need to always remember that we are all humans on the other end of these networks and we all deserve to live fulfilling and happy lives (except for scammers :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:).

That being said, 2.0 seems to be taking an amazing leap forward! These are beautiful renders that give us a good visual idea of the direction.

You have my undivided attention…

I’m also an earnestness receiver and have not sold anything either.
My thank to the project is learning more about it and be a good community member.
I’m also inspired by the values you guys have.
I’m new to web3 since a half year and really proud to be a part off this great project!
Thank you guys!

the renders get me excited. I feel anyone negative after ASR really wasn’t present or paying attention during all the Sanctum talks, especially planetary calls. these renders are pretty much as I imagined while you guys described the vision for LST use cases moving forward. what I mean is… its another case where your transparency and honesty during the live talks leads to real results. everything’s been above board so far with sanctum, and in crypto that builds the alignment we need to turn crypto from a fad into long term stores of value.
